Firefighters and divers yesterday conducted a futile search for a missing ship company engineer believed to have fallen into the freezing water off Kinmen, the Central News Agency reported.
The engineer, Chen Wen-pin, 53, was dispatched on Jan. 14 by his company to Kinmen for a routine check of a ferry operating the “mini links” route between the outlying island and the mainland, CNA said. The company had arranged for him to stay at a Kinmen hotel but Chen chose to spend the night on board another ferry, the Hsin Lung Chin, where he could drink and sing karaoke with others. When last seen, he was sleeping, but the next morning he was missing. His luggage and cell phone were still on the boat. Police in Kinmen were quoted as saying they believed Chen probably fell overboard on his way to the bathroom. It is not known why the divers and firefighters did not conduct a search for the missing engineer until yesterday.
