TAIPEI, Taiwan — Police in Kaohsiung are on the lookout for suspected criminal who clambered down a jet bridge and fled over a barbed wire fence after landing at the city’s airport late Monday. The suspect, surnamed Chao (趙) is wanted by authorities for drug-related offenses.
He arrived Kaohsiung International Airport around 11 p.m. Monday from Beijing on a China Airlines flight.
According to Kaohsiung’s Aviation Police Bureau, Chao lingered around the jet bridge after disembarking, before opening the bridge’s escape window and jumping down onto the tarmac. The 39-year-old then climbed over a barbed wire fence before escaping through the airport’s parking lot, the bureau said. The bureau said the airport’s control center had been watching the suspect as he fled but could not find him after the police arrived at the scene. The bureau said they had later searched nearby hospitals for as well as Chao’s residence but to no avail. Chao was last seen wearing dark-colored clothes and a jacket with a hat.
Amid concern over possible loopholes in airport security, Deputy Director of Kaohsiung International Airport Sun Yi-chung (孫翼中) told reporters that the airport would beef up its patrols and security. But Sun said the airport would not seal the escape windows of jet bridges because of “a single incident.”
